Adult Acne Information

Adult acne affects 25% of all adult men and 50% of adult women at some time in their adult lives. These are the official statistics, but I personally don’t know many adults who have not had a zit or two in their adult lives. People can develop unpleasant acne or have an acne recurrence in their 20s, 30s, 40s and beyond. It can be difficult to cope with no matter your age, and can cause depression and social anxiety in an adult the same way it can in a teen.

All acne begins with one basic lesion: an enlarged hair follicle plugged with oil, dead skin cells and bacteria. Invisible to the naked eye, blackheads lurk beneath the surface of the skin waiting for the right conditions to grow into an inflamed lesion. As the skin continues to produce more oil, bacteria flourish within the swollen follicle. The surrounding skin becomes increasingly inflamed, as your white blood cells fight against the intruders.

Hormonal disturbances in the body are another major reason for adult acne. They are largely triggered by Gonadotropins or the sex hormones which are known to affect the activity of sebaceous glands. Androgens too have pronounced affect on acne, especially among males.

Besides this, during pregnancy, there is a continuous shift in the levels of the progesterone and estrogen among women. This can also cause acne. Fortunately, the symptoms tend to be mild and disappear once the pregnancy term is completed.

Acne usually begins with blackheads Blackheads are not dirt, they’re actually the result of oil and dead cells getting trapped in a pore where they block the duct and mix with bacteria. They then turn black when exposed to air. Red pimples develop when blackheads become inflamed and they spread when touched with dirty hands. When the pimple becomes infected, it develops a whitehead or pustule. These can break and cause scars.

Home Remedies for Adult Acne

Rinse your face really well with warm water. This opens your pores, and loosens up the dirt and oils in your skin. You can also run a washcloth under hot water for a minute or so, and then place it on your face for about 30 seconds. The steam and heat will open up your pores, and break down the barriers for your face wash to charge in and crush the bacteria that causes acne! There are also facial steam kits that do a very good job with this if you don’t mind spending the extra money. This is one of the best home remedies for adult acne.

Applying of a mixture of 1 tablespoon dried or fresh yeast along with 2 tablespoons of lemon juice also results into reducing acne problem. This mixture needs to leave until it gets hard. Then after peel it and wash the face applying warm water. Applying a soaked cotton ball in lemon juice or in apple cider vinegar on face also helps in reducing acne. But before applying this remedy the affected area has to be clean properly.
